About

Hi! My name is Maddie Whitaker and I’m currently a sophomore double majoring in Media and Journalism and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I’m primarily interested in broadcast news and production as a career path. I am focused on business news and am working to become a financial correspondent who covers all things stock market, fiscal policy, international trade, company profiles, etc.

During the summer of 2022, I continued my work as a sales associate at an Atlanta boutique and participated in an internship opportunity called Introships Atlanta, a program launched by Atlanta businesspeople which provides college students with information about what a career is like in various companies and industries.

Currently, I am a copy editor at the Daily Tar Heel where I edit and proofread several weekly stories for clarity, accuracy, and AP style. Additionally, I recently completed an internship with the Social Talks, a young independent digital news platform dedicated to writing with impartiality, where I wrote two articles a week on topics of my choice. During my Junior year, I plan to get involved in Carolina Week, UNC’s weekly news broadcast, where I will practice and refine my storytelling abilities and technical skills.

Outside of the classroom and the office, I am passionate about exercise, animals, and music. I love weightlifting, outdoor walks, and Pilates. As an animal rights advocate, I have volunteered at numerous non-profits, such as the Lifeline Animal Project and Bosley’s Place, and have produced several biographic broadcast stories on these organizations.
